While many students are still concerned about the end of football season and the beginning of basketball, a group of students are preparing for the beginning of Scholars Bowl season. Practice began Sept. 22 and has generated excitement among the team members.

“I’m more excited for my first meet than nervous,” freshman Nathan Ohl said.

Scholars Bowl members must attend practice once a week, but the team has two different practice times in order to accommodate activities such as Cardinalaires and sports. Members can choose to go to practice at 7:15 on Tuesday morning or 3:45 on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to that, Scholars Bowl sponsor Connie Pauly sends out a set of PowerPoints with common questions for team members to study on their own time.

“I’ve studied the PowerPoints a little, and the questions seem to come up a lot,” Ohl said.

This year, the team has set their sights high following their defeat at Regionals last year. They placed fourth, barely missing the top three that move on to State. Five out of six players from the regional team last year will be returning.

“We are not even worried about it, because we’re gun’ win,” junior Dennis Zoglmann said.

Mrs. Pauly said she has high expectations for the team this year.

“I have always thought that this particular group of seniors have the potential to go to State,” Pauly said. “Regardless, I expect us to do very well.”

The students continue practicing and studying to get their brains revved up for the upcoming meets. The novice team, which consists of underclassmen and new members, has their first meet on Nov. 2 at Douglass. Varsity will see action Nov. 3 when they travel to Sedgwick. With many returning players and a group of new members, the Scholars Bowl team is ready for their first meets.
