Ready for some boys basketball?

by Romi Huggins

Basketball season is here. Players have a few weeks of practice under their belts, and  the first basketball game this season is Dec. 4 at Chaparral. The JV game will start at 4:30 p.m., followed by varsity girls and then varsity boys. There are four returning seniors: Anthony Becker, Justin Haist, Dylan Murphy and Lucas Shaffer. During the first practices, the boys have been working on installing their basic offense.

“I’m most looking forward to making memories my senior year,” Murphy said.

They have also been practicing their shooting and getting back in the groove. A total of 24 boys are out for basketball this season.

I am ready to start the season and shoot some 3’s” said junior Josh Dugan.

Last year, the boys came out victorious against Chaparral. The basketball boys have a lot going for them this year as well. They have speed, experience, and skill.

“Our team chemistry, in my opinion, is our best strength,” assistant coach Craig Frederick said. “The boys really get along well, like each other, and have a strong passion for the game.”

Although they have not began strategizing for their first game, their offense as well as their defense is starting to look promising, Coach Frederick said. The boys seem to have a mutual agreement that there is always something to improve on.

“We can never be satisfied and must always be striving to achieve more than we are right now,” Coach Frederick said.

The Conway Springs High school basketball season has begun. Practices started Nov. 16, and after more than a week of practice, the girls are getting ready to dominate this season.

“The girls are doing really well this year,” assistant coach Justin Regehr said. “They’re improving a lot and competing hard.”

There are 22 girls on the team this year, compared to the 16 on the team last year.

“I think varsity will do really good this year. We have a short team, but they’re good players,” senior Kristen Hilger said.

One of the incoming players this year is freshman Kayla Koester.

“I’m excited for the season to start,” said Koester. “It’s going to be really fun this year playing basketball with my friends.”

Returning varsity starters include senior Alicia Carter and juniors Erica Ebenkamp, Kalie Jones and Janae Pauly.

“I’m excited to start my senior year of basketball and just getting to play the game one last time,” said Hilger.

The Lady Cards’ first game of the season will be on Dec. 4 at Chaparral.

“Garden Plain will probably be our toughest competition in our league this year, but in our preseason tournament we’ll have some tough competition with Wellington, Kingman, and Douglass,” said Coach Regehr.

The preseason tournament will be Dec. 10-12 at Kingman.
