The Lady Cardinals hosted sub-state volleyball Oct. 26, putting up a fight to represent the team and finish their season strong. While the scoreboard wasn’t a pleasant sight to the varsity players, the performance of the players was an impressive one as viewed from the crowd.

“They played hard, and it was fun to watch,” junior Marcus Smith said.

Smith was one of the many ecstatic fans in the Conway Springs student section there to support the girls during their fight in the game against Douglass. The students were proud of the rather large turn out there to cheer on their fellow classmates.

“We had a rockin’ student section,” said Smith.

When it comes to the players’ feelings on their performance at sub-state, it seemed they were mostly all on the same page: disappointed in a loss but proud of the performance.

“I think we played okay, but we will probably have a better chance at winning next year,” said junior and varsity player Rachel Echelberry. “We had good energy, but we could have worked on our serve receive.”

Ending the match with a score of 15-25 in the first set and 10-25 in the second against Douglass, the volleyball players seemed a bit disappointed in their loss. However, they never gave up on playing the game.

“I personally thought the girls played well,” head coach April Zoglmann said. “We hung with Douglass well at the beginning and for almost half of the match, but then they found some weaknesses and really capitalized and scored well. Douglass was state ranked for a reason, and they were the better team that day.”

Coach Zoglmann also said she thought the players should be proud of their performance.

““Before the match began, we talked about leaving everything on the court and having no regrets,” she said. “Although things didn’t go our way, they still played well.”
