In just the second home game of the season, the Conway Springs Cardinals hosted the Douglass Bulldogs Jan 10. As usual, both JV teams played at 4:30 p.m. to start the night off. Varsity girls played at 6 p.m., with the varsity boys following.

The girls came out on top, defeating the Bulldogs 48-12. Freshman Kara Koester led the team with 12 points, and junior Lacey Pauly led in rebounds with eight. This win set their overall record at 4-5 and their league record at 2-3. The JV girls will compete in a league tournament this week at Medicine Lodge, and the varsity girls begin their Mulvane tournament next week, Jan. 23.

“We are starting to click,” Pauly said. “We need to work out some kinks and get ready for the tournament.”

Although the halftime score was a close 33-25, the varsity boys pulled away from Douglass in the second half. The final score was 65-51. They have an overall record of 8-1 and are undefeated in league at 5-0. The annual Roadrunner Classic Tournament for the boys begins Jan. 18 at Chaparral High School.

“Josh (Dugan) and I are working hard down low,” junior Christian Hedrick said, “and having big portions of points coming from the post position makes a big impact.”

Seniors Dugan and Noah Finstad had 15 points on Tuesday night, leading the Cardinals. Dugan has a total of 159 points this season and averages 17.7 points a game.

“We need to work on being more vocal,” Dugan said, “but we have good team chemistry. We’re a senior-heavy team that’s been playing together for a long time.”
