With one win already under the belt, the football team was ready for the first home game against Wichita Independent, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Unfortunately, the storm had an impact on that, and the game was postponed to Saturday the 10th at 5:30 p.m. after playing only half of the game. Some of the players were eager to finish, but others players had different plans. Senior Justin Lange participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Wichita with the Conway Springs Fire Department on September 10 before finishing the second half of the game. “After the 9/11 stair climb, I was pumped and just ready to finish the game,” Lange said. While most players had enough motivation to finish the game, one player didn’t get the chance to. In the second quarter on Friday, senior Gunnar Denney got injured. He tore ligaments and dislocated and fractured his elbow. “I’ll be out for four to six weeks,” Denney said. Right before the third quarter began, there were lightning strikes, and shortly after that, the storm started. “It was harder to keep the crowd pumped because they kept looking at the sky, hoping it wasn’t gonna storm,” junior cheerleader Clarissa Snow said. By the end of the game, Conway Springs came out victorious against Independent with a score of 26-6. “We played pretty good, but we can always do better,” senior Jacob Winter said. “At least we got it done and can move on to next week.” |
