Varsity and JV tennis girls finished strong at Wichita State University for the Central Plains League tennis tournament Oct. 6. Varsity and JV both placed first overall at the meet, defeating the previous record of 11 meets won in a season.

“We’ve done pretty well; we won a record of most meets won in a season for varsity and JV,” said coach Justin Regehr. “We have all got a medal at one meet or another, so that’s good.”

Varsity players and seniors Julie Ann Winter and Brittany Pauly took second place as number one doubles, and senior Kiana Finstad and sophomore Kalie Jones took first place as number two doubles. Senior Cece Robinson took second place as number one singles, and freshman Sabrina Bellar took first place as number two singles. Before the meet, Sabrina looked forward to the competition.

“It’s exciting and a little nerve-racking, but I’m ready and it should be fun,” Sabrina said.

Juniors and JV players Tiffany Willson and Ashley O’Neal took first place as number one doubles, and sophomores Sam Koch and Taylor May took first place as number two doubles. Sophomore Erica Ebenkamp took first place as number one singles, and sophomore Annie Robinson took first place as number two singles.

“I’ve improved a lot from last year, but I’m still working hard to get even better,” Annie said.

According to Coaches Bellar and Regehr, the girls have given their all to make the season the best it could possibly be. The same varsity players also competed at regionals Oct. 11-12. Going in to the competition, Coach Bellar knew it would be tough..

“The girls will need to play well and play hard and need solid play,” Coach Bellar said.

Winter and Pauly will be competing at state Oct. 17-18. For a complete preview, see our article “Competition looks tough for girls’ tennis at state.”
