Tuesday, Sept. 30, the varsity volleyball team had its senior night to recognize the senior players. The underclassman gave the senior players balloons, a goody bag and a carnation while varsity Coach April Martin said a few words about each senior. Coach Martin announced their numbers and their positions, added a few words of her own about the player, and then shared one of the player’s good or bad memories of high school volleyball. The memories included moments such as dropping a pickle jar on the locker room floor freshman year and memories of varsity pre-games. “I remember freshman year,” libero and senior Leora Seiler said, “I was chasing volleyballs to shag them, and I stepped on one and completely wiped out in front of everyone.” This is Coach Martin’s second year as coach, and this being her second group of seniors, she said this group has a lot of natural ability and drive. Anyone talking about the subject seems to see the same thing from the team. “It’s really nice to be part of a team that is this dedicated to a sport,” manager and senior Kyla Reep said, agreeing with Coach Martin’s statement. The varsity team has a tall lineup this year, according to Coach Martin, who said she will miss the height, experience, and strong hitters and blockers of the senior players. As for the rest of this season, Coach Martin said she hopes to win sub-state so they can move on to the state tournament. “I still want that killer instinct from the team and to get them to realize they are just as good as any other team in their class,” she said. |
