The tennis girls have been working hard at practices this year. The girls started practicing in August, before school had started. The players this year are: seniors Liz Berntsen, Ashley O’Neal, and Tiffany Willson; juniors Erica Ebenkamp, Kalie Jones, Sam Koch, Taylor May, and Annie Robinson; sophomores Sabrina Bellar and Jera Wolke; and freshman  Halie Jones, Leslie Mies, and Molly Schmanke.

“I think we’re doing pretty good,” Bellar said. “We need to keep working hard in practice so we can continue to keep getting better.”

There have been 17 meets for the girls this year. The team has won first, second, or third in 12 meets. The tennis girls have played many teams, including South Barber, Hesston, Maize, Chaparral, Valley Center and Winfield.

The only meets left for the girls are Regionals and those who qualify for State.

“I think we’ll finish pretty strong this year, especially the varsity players,” Halie  said.

Halie is one of the doubles players this year, partnered with May most of the time.

“I love the spirit we all have,” Halie said. “I’m a doubles player, so it’s easy to get pumped up after each point.”

The JV and varsity players went to Wichita State University for the league meet on Oct. 5. Both varsity and JV finished first at the league tournament.

“You always want to finish the season playing your best, which I think we did,” coach Chris Bellar said.
