The Conway Springs track team will have their first meet of the season on April 2 at Clearwater High School. The track team has been preparing for the season to start since the beginning of practice, back on March 2. “We have been trying to get a little more in shape each day,” head track coach Brent Martens said. “Hopefully the weather will cooperate the next week and a half so the runners and jumpers can practice.” Athletes go out for track for many reasons, and a popular reason seems to be to get in shape and to better the athlete’s ability in other sports, according to freshman Sabrina Bellar. Bellar works out along with the other distance runners under distance coach Justin Regehr, who doubles as the sand and high jumper’s coach as well. Fred Cottrell coaches all sprinters, and Matt Biehler is the throwing coach. “I’ve been lifting and running,” senior Logan Creek said. “That’s what throwers tend to do under Coach Biehler.” Coach Martens, along with being head coach, specializes in coaching pole vault and hurdlers. “I like to see how the athletes compete against themselves over the season,” Coach Martens said. “Hopefully everyone keeps getting better.”
