Many of the girls are excited for the season to begin again. “I’m excited to play Garden Plaine. We’ve battled with them for a long time, so I’m ready to beat them,” junior Makenna Zoglmann said. Winning substate has been a goal for the varsity since summer practices began. “I’m excited for substate and just getting to play volleyball again,” junior Bre Akiu said. “We’re having some difficulty communicating right now though. This is the first time most of us have played as a team together, so we haven’t totally clicked yet, so we definitely need to work on our communication.” The varsity’s first game of the season was September 2, at Hesston. They played Moundridge first, and then played Hesston, losing to both. “When we traveled to Hesston last Tuesday, it was a rough night,” head coach April Zoglmann said. “Hesston and Moundridge are both really good programs and potential State contenders. Even though we lost both matches, we now know what we need to work on.” Varsity also competed in an all day tournament at Winfield on August 30, playing different teams. There were many larger schools at this tournament, including teams that were as big as 6A. The girls played Augusta, Wellington, Andale, Ark City, El Dorado, and Winfield, winning three out of their six games. “I think we’ll do really well this year,” senior Amanda Drouhard said. “Hopefully we will do better than what everyone thinks we’ll do.” The theme for the team this year is “Under Construction”. “We only have two returners from last year’s team, and a slew of talented newcomers. We’re in the process of finding our strengths, weaknesses, and playing together as a team.” “The girls are hard workers and quick learners, so I have no doubt we will bounce back from the two losses and only grow from there,” Coach Zoglmann said.
